Demolition of old Kaitāia swimming pool completed
The demolition of the old Kaitāia Swimming Pool at Memorial Park was successfully completed last Friday, by contractor Far North Roading on behalf of Far North District Council.
The site has been transformed with grass seed sown, and protective measures including waratahs, netting, and a security fence are now in place to ensure optimal conditions for seed germination.
Once the grass has grown and barriers have been removed the open space will become part of Memorial Park Reserve.
The old Kaitāia pool was built in 1947 and included a 33.3m pool with six lanes, a dive pool, and a toddlers’ pool. However, the aging facility was becoming increasingly expensive to run and was eventually closed in April last year.
Swimmers can now enjoy new facilities at Te Hiku Sports Hub, with its state-of-the-art aquatic centre, gymnasium, and function rooms. It opened earlier this year and includes an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a toddler splash pool, and a learn-to-swim pool. The sports wing also has a range of free weights, cardio, and resistance weight machines.
