Libraries celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

This year’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, which runs from Saturday 14 to Saturday 21 September, is being celebrated with a range of activities at libraries throughout the Far North - including the chance to win a $50 prezzy card.

Kotahi rau kupu i te reo Māori is a competition to find kupu (words) hidden around each of our six libraries. Participants go into the draw to win one of six prezzy cards when they locate 50 or more words in te reo Māori. There are 100 kupu in total hidden at each of our libraries in Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Paihia, Kāeo, Kaitāia or Kerikeri.

Details of all programmes promoting the use of te reo Māori are available on each library’s Facebook page, and include:

  • Ngā tākaro rā (game days) - playing reo Māori games that will be added to the libraries' Toibox collection
  • Tukutuku Toi Māori sessions - learning to tell your story through a traditional artform
  • Kapu tī kōrero – cuppa and conversations in reo Māori
  • After school sessions - including a chance to tākaro (play), ako (learn), and kōrero reo Māori
  • Waiata (singing), kanikani (dance), whakarongo (listen) me pānui (read) - at Te Wiki o te Reo Māori storytime.

The week commemorates the anniversary of Te Petihana Reo Māori, the Māori language petition, being presented to Parliament in 1972. Te reo Māori became an official language of Aotearoa in 1987.

The theme of this year’s celebration of te reo Māori is ‘Ake, Ake, Ake – A Forever Language’, which was chosen to represent the resilience, adaptability and endurance of te reo Māori when it is ‘under enduring pressure’.

In the words of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori organisers “Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard.”
