Ngāti Rēhia and Council sign Te Aro Manatu - MOU

A formal agreement between Ngāti Rēhia and Far North District Council (FNDC) has been hailed as a significant step towards working collaboratively and strengthening the partnership between both parties.
Representatives from Ngāti Rēhia and the council, including Kahika Moko Tepania, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Kaikohe this week. The agreement:
- Outlines a shared commitment to maintaining a meaningful and collaborative partnership
- Recognises the importance of the mana whenua status and cultural values of Ngāti Rēhia
- Commits both parties to meeting regularly to discuss priorities and progress on joint initiatives
- Formalises the council’s support for the role of Ngāti Rēhia in making decisions affecting its rohe.
The MOU builds on a foundation of mutual respect, cooperation, and shared values. It aims to strengthen the partnership by ensuring that decisions affecting the rohe reflect the perspectives and aspirations of Ngāti Rēhia, as mana whenua.
Mayor Tepania said the agreement ensures the mana of the council’s relationship with Ngāti Rēhia is clear and enduring.
“It reflects the council’s commitment to incorporating Te Tiriti principles into our work and supporting positive outcomes for both Ngāti Rēhia and our wider community.”
Ngāti Rēhia spokesperson Kipa Munro highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the agreement.
“Our connections to these lands are reflected in our whakapapa, which stretches from Hawaiki to Mataatua Waka,” Munro said. “This covenant shows where our home is and acknowledges our responsibilities to these lands and waters.”
He also acknowledged the support of other hapū leaders present and emphasised the importance of a kaupapa that brings everyone together.
