Kaikohe refuse transfers to new location

There will be significant savings for ratepayers with the relocation of Kaikohe’s transfer station next month from Station Road to its former location on Carey Road off State Highway 15.

The current Station Road transfer station site is leased by Waste Management New Zealand (WM New Zealand), where it processes commercial and kerbside rubbish collections before the waste is transported to Purewa Landfill, south of Whangārei.

In August, the council awarded a 10-year contract to operate its network of refuse transfer stations and community recycling centres to Northland Waste Limited. This change of operator has prompted the relocation of the Kaikohe Refuse Station to the council-owned site on Carey Road from Sunday 1 December.

This move will reduce costs by investing in council-owned assets rather than spending money to lease non-council premises. There will be no reduction in services.

Opening hours

Carey Road transfer station will continue the usual opening hours of:

  • Monday to Friday - 7.30am to 5pm
  • Saturday and Sunday - 9am to 5pm.

Fees and charges

The same fees and charges will apply at the new Carey Road location for services and drop offs of rubbish, green waste, and subsidised e-waste.

Recycling and scrap metal (including whiteware) is free, as well as domestic quantities of batteries and waste oil.
