Recent alcohol sales compliance check highlights concerns

Far North District Council licensing inspectors are working directly with an alcohol store owner whose business was caught selling alcohol to a minor during a police-controlled purchase operation last month in the Hokianga.

NZ Police and National Public Health Service (Northern Region) are disappointed following the controlled operation. The operation involved underage volunteers, aged 17, attempt to purchase alcohol from licensed premises in the Hokianga area.

Sergeant Michelle Row, Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer, Kerikeri Police said 10 premises were tested in the Hokianga region which resulted in one sale.

Kevin Johnson, Group Manager for Delivery and Operations at council says, "The rules are very clear on underage sales. We expect premises to have appropriate systems and procedures in place to prevent sales of alcohol products to minors. Council staff will be working with this outlet to ensure those measures are in place to ensure there is no repeat of sales to minors."

The Far North District Council follows specific guidelines and has a detailed application process when issuing alcohol licenses to ensure the sale and supply of alcohol are conducted safely and responsibly.
