VIDEO - Maritime facilities upgrade for Whangaroa Harbour
Boaties and fishers are in for a treat with two of the jetties on Whangaroa Harbour being upgraded with new pontoons.
Work has already commenced on the Clansman Wharf on the south side of the harbour, with new fender piles currently being installed, and a new pontoon due to be completed by the end of September.
The smaller Marlin Wharf, opposite the Whangaroa Village Hall, is also due to have a new pontoon installed later this month.
Across the harbour to the northwest, the Tōtara North Wharf will be fitted with new fender piles to the existing jetty structure.
The project is being carried out by Far North Holdings Ltd on behalf of Far North District Council. Demand for recreational maritime facilities has been steadily increasing in the Far North and the council has already invested – with Government support from the Provincial Growth Fund – in upgrades at Pukenui, Unahi, Hokianga Harbour and Mangōnui.
In the meantime, construction of the bus parking platform next to the wharf at Mangōnui has been delayed, as the dredging barge needed to help in the construction is being used by the Ministry for Primary Industries to battle the Caulerpa seaweed outbreak threatening the New Zealand’s coastline and the Bay of Islands. Work to complete the structure will speed up once the barge is available again.
