Councillor Halkyard-Harawira clinches national waka ama win
Ngā Tai o Tokerau Māori Ward Councillor Hilda Halkyard-Harawira has claimed first place in the Master 70 Women – W1 500-metre sprint at the 2025 Waka Ama Sprint Nationals held this week at Lake Karāpiro.
Competing in lane 1, Councillor Halkyard-Harawira held the lead for most of the race and won with an impressive time of 3:10.82.
The 35th annual Waka Ama Sprint Nationals is running this week (12-18 January) and has attracted a record-breaking 3875 participants from across Aotearoa. The event, supported by manawhenua groups Ngāti Korokī Kahukura and Ngāti Hauā, is set to host more than 8000 spectators throughout the seven-day competition.
