West Coast roads repairs

Information on completed emergency works, road inspections and planned general maintenance on roads around our West Coast towns will be regularly updated here. These repairs are due to damage caused during Cyclone Gabrielle and other weather events in 2022 and 2023.

Recovery phases

There are three phases to our recovery planning. Phase 1 - Initial response, Phase 2 - Minor recovery works, Phase 3 - Major recovery works.

Phase 2 works are: minor, generally costing less than $100,000 per site, and involve lower risk. The goal is to restore most roads to their previous condition. Each site requires an application to Waka Kotahi and funding approval.

Works to Phase 2 slip sites

Recently completed Phase 2 emergency works include:

Creamery Road, Kohukohu - rock wall and drainage repairs
Paponga Road, Kohukohu - three rock walls and drainage repairs
Broadwood Road, Broadwood - pavement repair
Mangamuka Road, Mangamuka - pavement repair
Diggers Valley Road, Herekino - rock wall.
Runaruna Road (Panguru) - rock wall installation around a repaired culvert.

Planned Phase 2 emergency works include:

Kauaepepe Road, Mangamuka - four slip repairs due to start in April 2024
Diggers Valley Road, Herekino - three slip repairs due to start before the end of March 2024
Waiotehue Road, Herekino - seven slip repairs (in the planning stage)
Iwitaua Road, Mangamuka - one slip repair (in the planning stage).

Road inspections in West Coast areas

Daily inspections are currently carried out on West Coast Road and Phase 3 slip sites in Panguru and Motutī.
The entire West Coast Road is inspected for maintenance requirements on a monthly basis.

General maintenance

Work completed in March 2024:

Resurfacing repairs to Kaitāia-Awaroa Road, Awaroa Road, Broadwood Road, Kohukohu Road and West Coast Road.

Unsealed potholes - Smith Deviation Road (Kohukohu), Blue Mountain Road (Kohukohu), Motukaraka Point Road (Kohukohu), Carmen Road (Broadwood), Te Karaka Road (Panguru), Kohe Road (Pawarenga), Te Umuhuki Road (Pawarenga), Manukau Road (Herekino), Hui Road (Herekino), Owhata Road (Herekino), Runaruna Road (Panguru) , West Coast Road , Haumanga Road (Broadwood), Rangikohu Road (Herekino), Diggers Valley Road (Herekino), Waiotehue Road (Herekino), Takahue Saddle Road (Takahue).

Grading – Whangapē Road (Herekino), Runaruna Road (Panguru), West Coast Road , Hui Road (Herekino), Proctor Road (Pawarenga), Tatana Road (Herekino), Pawarenga Road (Pawarenga).

Work to be completed include:

Grading (subject to suitable moisture) – Creamery Road (Kohukohu).
