Ōpononi Plant Upgrade
Project details
The Council plans to upgrade the Ōpononi wastewater treatment plant to improve the quality of the treated wastewater that is discharged to the Harbour.
The Regional Plan for Northland provides guidance and rules about the quality of the wastewater that can be discharged. When the current resource consent is renewed the discharge to water will need to meet strict quality standards.
Council’s engineers and planners explored options to upgrade the existing plant so that it can treat Ōpononi’s wastewater to a higher standard. You can read the upgrade report here.
The preferred upgrade option for Ōpononi includes:
Task |
|
---|---|
Install baffle curtains | Baffle curtains will increase retention time within the ponds and reduce short-circuiting. |
Install a chemically assisted solids removal unit | This allows for residual algae from the wetland effluent to be removed before the treated wastewater is discharged. Algae removed from the effluent is returned to the inlet of the WWTP. |
Install a UV disinfection unit | UV units remove pathogens from the wastewater. |
Install a submerged aerated filter unit | This is used to remove nitrogen from the wastewater. |
