Dog registration launches 1 July
The chance to register your dog for the new financial year began on Monday 1 July. As well as being the best time to pay, for the cheapest fees, paying between 1 July and 31 August will put you in the draw to win a prize pack.
There are 10 prize packs up for grabs this year for those that do register their dogs between 1 July and 31 August. Each prize pack includes a refund on your dog registration plus two large bags of dog biscuits. Winners will be drawn after the promotional period has ended. Only one dog registration will be free per winner.
This year’s campaign continues the ‘Dogs are whānau’ theme featuring a local family and their whānau dogs. The campaign is already running on the council’s social media channels to give residents plenty of notice of the payment period starting on 1 July.
You’ll also see posters at council service centres, isites and libraries and if you live in Kaitāia and Ahipara you’ll be able to spot the digital signs displaying the ‘Dogs are whānau’ campaign featuring this year’s Far North faces.
The whānau theme of the campaign focuses on responsible dog ownership which includes keeping your dog under control in public spaces and avoiding situations where they could frighten or injure people or other dogs.
Dog owners throughout the Far North will also start receiving the Kuri-Karere Doggo Digest newsletter from this week, along with their dog registration reminder letters. You can also find it online in our newsletter library.
Dog registration fees help the council to manage stray, barking and aggressive dogs, take action on uncontrolled dogs, and helps our Adopt-a-dog scheme too. Last year 8495 dogs were registered in the Far North.
Different discounts on dog registrations may apply to your dog. You can find out more by searching for the Fees and Charges document on our website from 1 July.
Dog registration fees can be paid all year round and dog owners are legally required to register their dogs for the year, but the fees are higher between 1 September and 30 June 2025. In the Far North, dogs must be registered from three months of age, or as soon as they come into your possession.
