Your FAQs

Why is this happening?

The move is part of wider efforts to operate services at peak efficiency within the Far North District Council and also reflects the changing workplace. We estimate this move will save the ratepayer around $250,000 over five years and enable services to operate at maximum value.

What does a changing workplace mean?

There are changing demands. Service centres are seeing fewer walk-in customers, as residents carry out more tasks online. The role of libraries is also changing. They are more than just book lenders – they are becoming community hubs offering information and knowledge services and activities of all types.

When will the service centre move?

1 May 2025.

Will services be impacted?

No. The opposite is true. We are not reducing services, it’s about reducing costs for ratepayers while improving service delivery.

Will there be staff cuts?

No. This move aims to maximise all our resourcing and support the operation of increasingly busy libraries.

How will this impact current staff?

We are developing a multi-skilled workforce in libraries so staff can work at both the library and the service centre. It’s now a more agile workforce.

Will Procter Library have to be adapted?

There will be some internal work at the library to accommodate the service centre. Once a contractor is appointed, a timeline of work will be available on this website.

What will these changes look like?

The front counter will change and the area around the current counter area will be opened up to increase public space in the lower floor. Two meeting rooms will be added, and the customer returns and self-checkout area will be altered to make it easier for customers. Our upstairs office space will be expanded.

Where is the money coming from to do the work?

Works to reshape Procter Library will be undertaken using renewal funds already allocated to this building. No new budget is required.

What about parking?

There is free parking across the road, at the rear of the library and disability parking is available outside the library.
