Project background
A new library building in Kaikohe is one step closer with tenders for the contract to demolish buildings on the site of the new library closing in early June.
The new building will be located on the corner of Raihara Street and Broadway in Kaikohe. This is 80m away from the existing Kaikohe Library, in Marino Place.
A design team has been appointed for the project and is working through concepts for the new facility. The draft design process is expected to take around five months.
A start date for construction of the new build will be confirmed once the design phase is completed.
Far North Holdings Limited (FNHL) is project managing the new build and will be working closely with hapū, iwi, the community, council staff and councillors throughout the project.
The Kaikohe Library will remain open at its current location for the majority of the construction project. There is expected to be a temporary closure of the service when the library moves into the new space, but this will be well-advertised in advance to minimise disruption.
What happens to the existing library?
The existing library will remain in Marino Place, Kaikohe for much of the new build project. There will be a temporary closure when the new building has been finished and library services are ready to relocate to the new space. Disruption to services will be kept to a minimum whenever possible. Options for the Marino Place building, when the library moves out, are being considered as part of the project.
Will local companies be used in the build?
Yes, wherever possible local companies will be employed to complete different aspects of the building project.
How is the project funded?
The project is funded through the council's Long Term Plan 2024-27.
