Around 1500 of the best paddlers in New Zealand will meet at Waitangi early next month for the Waka Ama Long Distance Nationals 2022.

Nga Kaihoe O Aotearoa - Waka Ama New Zealand (WANZ) is hosting the event which attracts competitors from clubs across New Zealand ranging in age from 11 years to 70-plus.

The annual event is held in a different region each year and this year Waitangi will be the focus of attention for paddlers and their supporters.

Racing is planned for Friday 7 October and Saturday 8 October with Sunday 9 October as a reserve day if required.

This means that Waitangi boat ramp will be closed to the public on Friday 7 October and Saturday 8 October from 6am to 5pm each day.

While the very popular sporting event generally runs over three days, the boat ramp will only be closed on the two Friday and Saturday event days.
