The much-anticipated opening of Te Hiku Sports Hub is a step closer after the council approved an additional funding request to get the project across the finish line.
Te Hiku Sports Hub Incorporated requested $610,916 from the council to complete and open the new facility. It cited the impact of inflation on construction costs following the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent supply chain slow down as the main cause of delays and increased costs.
Presenting the funding request to the council, Project Manager Mark Osborne told councillors that Te Hiku Sports Hub Incorporated had raised over $11 million from a variety of sources to build the new multi-sport and aquatic centre.
The funding request was considered in public exclusion during the council’s meeting on Thursday 8 February due to the commercially sensitive budget information being discussed.
Of the extra funding, $500,000 will be allocated to complete the project, with the remaining $110,916 going towards operational costs.
Planning for a grand opening of the facility is underway and expected to take place in late April.
