Three Far North wharves set for upgrades

Three popular wharves at Whangaroa are to undergo upgrades as part of a $1.2 million project.

Work will begin on Marlin Jetty, Clansman Wharf and Tōtara North Wharf this month once specialist equipment arrives onsite.

At Tōtara North Wharf, the existing hardwood fenders will be replaced with steel piles and fenders, new bollards will be installed, and an access ladder will be placed at the end of the wharf.

At Marlin Jetty, the existing pontoon will be demolished, and its gangway will be removed. It will be replaced with a new 10x4m concrete pontoon with vertical fenders, a new aluminium gangway and timber fender piles.

The gangway and pontoon at the Clansman Wharf will be replaced with a new one-piece concrete pontoon with vertical fenders, aluminium gangway, and timber fender piles.

The Whangaroa harbour wharves are important infrastructure for the local community, visitors, and commercial fishing and aquaculture industries. The upgrades will provide modern, safe structures for commercial users at Tōtara North and Clansman wharves, and for recreational users and tourists at the Marlin and Clansman pontoons.

The project is being carried out by Far North Holdings Ltd on behalf of Far North District Council. Demand for recreational maritime facilities has been steadily increasing in the Far North and the council has already invested – with Government support from the Provincial Growth Fund – in upgrades at Pukenui, Unahi, Hokianga Harbour and Mangōnui. Similar work is being considered for Rangitāne.
