Far North District Council mayor recognised by national poll

Far North Kahika Moko Tepania is New Zealand’s most popular mayor, according to a poll by the Taxpayers’ Union.

A recent poll conducted by the pressure group ranked Far North Kahika Moko Tepania as the highest-rated mayor in New Zealand, based on public feedback.

The nationwide survey asked respondents to rate their mayor’s performance since the 2022 elections, with Kahika Tepania receiving the highest net approval rating at 39 per cent.

While the Taxpayers’ Union is best known for scrutinising local government performance and spending, this latest poll provides an interesting snapshot of public sentiment across the country.

Recognition of the mayor comes at a time when Far North District Council (FNDC) has been working to navigate economic and environmental challenges while maintaining one of the lowest rates increases in the country at 4.5 per cent for the 2024-25 financial year. This was achieved through prudent financial management, a commitment to service delivery, and a $5 million dividend from the council’s commercial arm, Far North Holdings Ltd.

FNDC has also taken steps to improve transparency and community engagement, including the inaugural State of the Far North Address: Road to Recovery in November 2024. This event, attended by a wide range of business, community, political, and Te Ao Māori representatives, provided an opportunity to outline how the council is responding to economic shifts and the impacts of significant weather events.

During the address, Kahika Tepania told the 200-strong audience that tackling the challenges facing the district required elected members and council staff to work in partnership with community leaders and groups. He challenged all residents to play their part in changing the conversation with council by responding to consultations, watching meeting livestreams, and raising requests for service.

The Taxpayers’ Union poll, which surveyed public sentiment across local government leadership, also ranked mayors from Waimakariri and Kaipara District Councils among the top three.

FNDC remains committed to delivering services and initiatives that reflect the needs of the community, with elected members and staff working together to ensure positive outcomes for the district.
