Almost 128K allocated in community funding
Over the last two months, sporting, cultural and community groups across the Far North have benefitted from almost $128,000, from our three local community boards.
Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board granted Te Kura Takiwā o Ōpononi /Ōpononi Area School$10,000 to host both the school’s 50th jubilee and a regional kapa haka festival. Te Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Festival 2025 will be one of the largest cultural performances of the year in Northland with everyone invited to watch the performers. The school’s jubilee celebrations, while targeted specifically at past students, are also expected to attract a significant number of participants.
Te Hiku Community Board has assisted the Momentum Charitable Trust with $2270 to run a second series of life and financial education classes at the Kaitāia Probation Centre. The board previously granted the trust $2145 in May 2024 for programmes which helped people in prison and on probation develop real world skills. Doubtless Bay Tennis Club also received $5000 to construct pickleball courts for community use.
A grant of $18,973 from Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board will help Te Tii Waitangi Marae replace electrical wiring in the marae. Te Tii Waitangi Marae is 100 years old and has not had any significant renovation or investment in facilities since Queen Elizabeth’s visit in 1990. The marae holds mana as a place of national historical significance for the signing of He Whakaputanga (Declaration of Independence) in 1835, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840.
