Heart-felt haka makes milestone for new citizens
A heart-felt haka by students from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kaikohe took a ceremony in Council Chambers to new heights as 29 Far North residents officially became New Zealanders on Monday 2 December.
Kahika Moko Tepania welcomed the citizens from 15 different countries – including the UK, Czech Republic, Germany and Thailand.
The students’ haka was to tautoko (support) their kaiako (teacher) taking his journey to citizenship and their performance gave the milestone event a special Far North flavour.
Watched on by about 70 supporters, the new citizens each completed a pledge of allegiance to New Zealand and King Charles III before receiving a certificate to acknowledge their citizenship.
The ceremony included a ‘Welcome to Aotearoa’ video featuring Her Excellency The Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro, as King Charles’ representative, and finished with the national anthem sung in te reo Māori and English.
The mayor called the Far North ‘the greatest district in Aotearoa’ by name-checking places of cultural and historical significance including Waitangi, Cape Reinga and the Hokianga. He was supported in his officiating duties by Kōwhai (Deputy Mayor) Kelly Stratford, councillor Babe Kapa and council staff.
