Cemetery plots for future residents

It’s no secret that Kerikeri’s population has been steadily growing for years – even the months since the 2023 census has seen a jump of almost 300 people taking up residence.

With an estimated 8360 people now living in the Far North’s largest town, perhaps less talked about is how cemetery space also needs to grow.

Accommodating residents with a ‘forever’ plot has prompted a recent expansion at the Kerikeri Cemetery in Wiroa Road.

The recently completed work includes the addition of 52 new ash burial plots which provide a dedicated space for those seeking cremation burial options. To further expand the cemetery’s capacity, 164 new burial plots have also been completed.

While the trend is for people to plan their own funerals and opt for less traditional resting places, those residents who do want to make use of Kerikeri Cemetery’s facilities now have more options to rest in peace.
