Suspected leak threatens Rāwene water supply

Unusually high water consumption could drain Rāwene’s water reservoir over the weekend and residents are urged to immediately report unusual water use or leaks to prevent taps running dry.

Council water contractor, Far North Waters Alliance (FNW), says a suspected leak is the most likely cause of water consumption outstripping the ability of the treatment plant to replenish treated water supplies stored in the town’s reservoir. As of midday Friday, it was only a third full. Unless consumption can be reduced, FNW says, the town may run out of water completely over the weekend.

Far North Waters Alliance Manager Mathew Arthur is calling on local’s support as the town’s reservoir is slowly being drained.

“I’m urging all residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption and for anyone who sees a leak to immediately call the council so we can get repairs underway.”

He says the sound of constantly running water, or unusually wet patches of grass or concrete are likely signs of a water leak. This could be on public or private land.

“Leaks on private property are normally the property owner’s responsibility, but I would urge anyone in that situation to contact us. Our focus is on preventing a loss of water at Rāwene and we will happily explore options with tenants and property owners to get repairs done.”

He says FNW staff are currently inspecting the Rāwene network trying to identify possible leaks or locations with unusually high water consumption. The search may include closing mains valves to isolate parts of the network to help pinpoint the source of the problem.

“Residents can be a huge help. The more eyes and ears we have, the quicker we can locate the problem and the faster we can refill the Rāwene’s reservoir.”

Please call the council on 0800 920 029 if you want to report a water leak. Our staff are available 24 hours a day.
