Dog impounded after alleged attack in Taipā
A dog has been impounded by the council’s Animal Management Officers (AMOs) after it allegedly attacked an 8-year-old girl yesterday afternoon at Taipā Beach.
A council AMO was patrolling nearby at the time of the incident. It is understood the girl was walking with a family member at the beach at the time of the incident.
It has been reported the young girl received treatment at Kaitāia Hospital.
Patrols by AMOs at Taipā were recently increased due to a previous dog attack.
It does not appear there is a connection between the dog impounded for the attack yesterday afternoon and recently reported attacks at Taipā.
The incident highlights the importance of owners ensuring their dogs are under control at all times, to protect members of the public.
An investigation into the incident is underway to determine any enforcement action on the owner of the dog.
Anyone can report stray or aggressive dogs at any time of day or night by calling the council on 0800 920 029. Please provide as many details as you can including the type of dog involved, the time and location of any incidents. Animal Management staff are on duty throughout the holiday period.
