Congrats in order for newly graduated cadets

Congratulations were showered on the latest group of graduates to complete their 10-month work experience as part of Far North District Council’s (FNDC) internship programme.

Five students graduated from the FNDC programme which partners with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and the Mayor’s Taskforce for jobs.

Mayor Moko Tepania led a Whakawātea Ceremony held early this month in Kaikohe to acknowledge the interns and all their accomplishments. They were also praised by council managers for their commitment to learning, enthusiasm and development throughout their journey.

The FNDC-based interns - Shariyah Rakete, Mya Parker, Tyela Wood, Lexus Loft and Azalea Warren - worked in the council’s infrastructure, compliance, finance, libraries, and customer services teams. Four graduates have now secured ongoing roles with the council.

More than 50 cadets have participated in the FNDC cadetship programme since 2006. The goal is to provide young people opportunities to begin their careers. Numerous cadets have gone onto permanent roles within the council and some are now working at management level.

A new intake of applicants for the eight-week course through MSD and Work Ready began on Monday 15 July. It aims to support rangatahi between the ages of 16 and 24 into work and provide career opportunities not easily accessible for young people in rural areas. FNDC will then select cadets for its next cadetship programme.

If you are an ambitious young person interested in becoming a cadet, contact MSD or Work Ready to find out more.
