Traffic trial to begin on iconic waterfront in Kororāreka/Russell
The Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board will launch a six-month pilot traffic reduction trial on The Strand in Kororāreka/Russell, with changes starting on 6 December 2024.
During the trial, the northern section of The Strand beyond the Duke of Marlborough will remain a shared space for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, while the central portion from Cass Street past the Town Hall to Pitt Street, will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic.
The trial aims to assess the benefits of a pedestrian-friendly environment along The Strand, one of Kororāreka/Russell’s most iconic waterfront areas. This initiative aligns with community feedback, which strongly supported creating a safer, more walkable space and will allow the community to experience the differences between both shared and pedestrianised areas.
Throughout the six-month period, the street layout will be adjusted to improve pedestrian and cyclist access while maintaining essential access for emergency services and residents. Enhancements to the public spaces along the waterfront are also planned to enrich the area’s ambiance and enhance visitor experiences.
Community feedback will play a crucial role in evaluating the trial’s success. Paper-based surveys will be available at local businesses along The Strand throughout the busy summer period so residents and visitors can share their views on the trial. Additionally, a four-week digital “Have Your Say” consultation will open around May 2025, allowing the community to provide feedback online.
This trial supports broader objectives of preserving Kororāreka/Russell’s heritage, improving public safety, and protecting the iconic pōhutukawa trees that line The Strand. The council is committed to a transparent evaluation process and welcomes all input as the community shapes the future of this historic waterfront space.
