Overnight rain impacts roads, closes Kāeo library

Most parts of the Far North received close to 100mm of rain over the past 24 hours with surface flooding affecting several district roads, and Kāeo Library forced to close today due to flooding. All other council services are open as normal.
According to roading contractors, some district roads have been impacted by flooding, but there are no reports of significant damage. Road crews are out checking the network, clearing debris and ensuring roads are reopened as soon as possible.
Impacted roads include:
- Ōruru Rd
- Peria Rd
- Kaitāia- Awaroa Rd
- Kenana Rd
- Omaunu Rd
- Kohumaru Rd.
There are no reports of weather-related closures on the State Highway network.
According to Northland Regional Council rainfall data, most parts of the Far North have received around 100mm of rain since yesterday, with an impressive 209.5mm recorded at Touwai in Whangaroa. On the parched west coast, however, rainfall was closer to 80mm over 24 hours.
The rain has seen water flows in significant waterways such as the Waitangi River and the Awanui River in Kaitāia increase. However, levels are already falling for smaller waterways, such as the Waiotemarama, which is a secondary water source for the council’s Ōpononi-Ōmāpere water supply.
While the rain is welcome, there is no change to current water restrictions and residents are urged to continue conserving water. Level 3 water restrictions are in place at Kawakawa and Moerewa, and for the Hokianga towns of Ōmanaia, Rāwene, Ōpononi and Ōmāpere. All other Far North water supplies - Kaikohe, Kaitāia, Ōkaihau, Kerikeri-Waipapa and Paihia-Ōpua-Waitangi - remain at Level 2 restrictions banning the use of outdoor sprinklers and irrigation systems.
According to MetService, conditions will ease this afternoon to isolated showers with fine weather forecast for Northland on Saturday.
The wet weather has also impacted power supplies with isolated outages reported by Top Energy. You can get real-time updates on power outages on the Top Energy outages page.
