Blockages close Kaitāia campervan dump station

The dump station at Te Ahu in Kaitāia will be closed until further notice as council investigates ongoing blockages of the facility.

The dump station is used by motorhome and caravan users to dispose of waste but has suffered repeated blockages requiring daily callouts for repairs. The blockages are being caused by non-waste items being placed into the system, including wet wipes, clothing, seafood shells, and sticks.

Despite signs advising that the dump station is closed, people are continuing to use the station, resulting in further callouts and public health risks. To protect the public from sewage spills into the adjacent carpark, temporary fencing is being installed to secure the site until repairs can be made.

A complete list of alternative dump stations in Northland can be found here. The next closest is at Mangōnui. Some private camping grounds also provide dump station facilities in the Far North and motorhome and caravan users are urged to also investigate these.

Please ensure that non-waste items are not disposed of in dump stations. This general waste can be deposited at one of the 16 council transfer stations located across the district.

The Motor Camp Association has been informed of the closure.
