Taipā Working Group

What is the Taipā Working Group for?

The working group was formed after an Environmental Court hearing ordered different interest groups to work together. The working group formed a strategy to deal with issues that had arisen at the Taipā Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), where the resource consent had lapsed.

The working group is made up of:

  • Three local hapū representatives from Matakairiri, Ngāti Whata, Ngāti Tara
  • One community member
  • One  Far North District Council staff member.
What is the goal of the Taipā Working Group?

The issue at the Taipā WWTP was that the nutrient levels were too high and the discharge had contaminated other sites, including the waterways.

The working group wanted to find ways to clean up the wastewater, stop pollution of the waterways, and make wastewater disposal safer for the environment.

The main goal of the collective is that the discharge of wastewater from the Taipā plant produces bacteria and nutrient levels which are not harmful to the environment and are not polluting the land and waterways.

Who is the working group on the Taipā WWTP Transformation Project?

Find out more from Trudy Allen, who is a hapū representative, in the video below.
