We maintain a range of facilities for Far North residents and visitors, including playgrounds, sports fields, swimming pools, walkways and reserves. We also own and maintain toilets, wharves and pontoons, cemeteries, libraries, community halls and housing for the elderly.

Kaitāia Library, established in 1882, was one of the first public libraries in New Zealand.

In 2012 the library moved to its current location in the stunning Te Ahu building where a stylised kauri tree takes centre stage in the library space. Facilities here include a café (run by Te Ahu Trust), a council service desk, an isite visitor information centre and Te Ahu Museum. A cinema and banquet room nearby, are also run by Te Ahu Trust.

This is the second largest library in the Far North and we have around 25,000 items available to borrow!

Everyone is welcome to read or borrow from our collections, meet friends, use the free computers or enjoy a coffee. We have chess, scrabble, cards and other board games available as well as the local papers.

As the most northern public library in the country, we welcome both local residents and visitors making a last stop before heading to Cape Reinga.
