Kaitāia

About the water supply

Kaitāia’s primary water source is the Awanui River with a secondary, much smaller supply from the Okahu Stream. The council has a consent to take water from the Awanui at flows above 460 litres a second at the water intake.

Supply improvements

The council has developed a bore site at Sweetwater near Kaitāia to permanently supplement supplies from the Awanui River. The water is piped to the council’s water treatment plant in Okahu Road.

The council will build a permanent weir in the Awanui River below its intake pipe to raise the water level and improve supplies during dry weather.
