Ahipara footbridge replacement project

What is this project?

Works to replace the pedestrian bridge at 15 Foreshore Road, Ahipara are scheduled from 3 March to 4 April 2025. The project will involve:

  • Deconstruction of the existing pedestrian bridge
  • Craning in of new bridge beams
  • Installing a timber guardrail.

There will be pedestrian access over the bridge at all times, but slight delays may occur when the crane is in operation on 13 March and 17 March. While footpaths may close at other times, alternative routes will be made available.

Traffic controllers will be on-site to assist pedestrians during work hours.

The completion date of works is weather dependent and may change if wet weather is frequent.

Important information for motorists

Temporary traffic management will be necessary for several weeks as well as a five-day road closure.

Temporary traffic management will allow council contractors to prepare to replace the bridge’s footpath. Please follow detours and the directions of our traffic management staff on-site and use alternative routes.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we carry out this essential construction work.

Temporary traffic management

Three sets of traffic lights near the intersection of Foreshore Road and Roma Road (Twin Coast Discovery Highway) will enable one lane of traffic over the bridge, Monday to Sunday, 7am to 6pm on the following dates:

  • 3 to 12 March
  • 18 March to 4 April

From 13 to 17 March a full road closure will be in place, as outlined below.

Full road closure - from 13 to 17 March

A full closure of the bridge will allow for the demolition of the old footpath.

  • 13 to 17 March
  • Monday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm (plus Sunday 16 March)
  • No nightshift works are proposed.

A detour along Roma Road, Kaitāia-Awaroa Road, and Ahipara Road will operate during this time.

Please follow all traffic management signs and instructions from the traffic controllers to ensure your safety and that of our workers.
