Final whistle for iconic outdoor pool

Work will begin next week to demolish Kaitāia’s former outdoor swimming pool and associated buildings at Memorial Park.

Security fencing will be erected on Monday 22 July with a week or so set aside to remove asbestos from the site. The buildings at the former pool site will then be demolished with the area turned back into green space as part of Memorial Park.

Contractor, Far North Roading, will be carrying out the work on behalf of Far North District Council. It is expected to take about five weeks to complete.

The facility was built in 1947 and consists of a 33.3m pool with six lanes, a dive pool, and a toddlers’ pool. The aging facility closed in April last year as it was no longer fit for purpose.

Swimmers can now enjoy facilities at Te Hiku Sports Hub, with its state-of-the-art aquatic centre, gymnasium, and function rooms. It opened last month and includes an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a toddler splash pool, and a learn-to-swim pool. The sports wing also has a range of free weights, cardio, and resistance weight machines.
