Arts and culture celebrated with community board funding

Arts and culture came out ‘tops’ when the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board granted more than $20,000 to six organisations at its recent meeting on Thursday 20 February.
Popular kapa haka classes, hosted by Ngāti Rēhia, are back on the agenda at the Turner Centre after it was granted $5000 to hold a new 10-week series of classes. This builds on the success of previous classes where participants benefitted from sharing culture, skills and knowledge through the performance art.
Ōpononi Area School will put the $7500 provided by the board towards hosting the 50th anniversary of the Te Tai Tokerau Secondary School Kapa Haka Festival. The festival aims to boost the mana of all participating students and schools by displaying their connection and knowledge of te reo Māori.
Whangaroa County Museum and Archives will use $1518 granted to produce a scenic map for motorists which highlights historical places of interest, as well as promotional pamphlets encouraging tourists and locals to visit.
A 100 x 100mm art show, by ArtsXL Charitable Trust was granted $610 for promotional purposes. The show will promote 100 local artists and their 100mm art which will be displayed at the Turner Centre. Each art piece will be sold for $100.
Te Whare Pora o Whangaroa will use $1460 granted to go towards a concert by New Zealand musicians Heti & Hope who are visiting the area as part of their Arts on Tour NZ Trust nationwide tour.
Youthline Auckland Charitable Trust also received a $8000 grant for its private helpline which supports Far North rangatahi with anonymous counselling.
