Rangitoto Reserve Classification
This consultation is now closed. Submissions were open for four weeks from Thursday 14 February to Thursday 14 March 2024.
We are seeking public feedback on the proposed classification of Rangitoto Reserve, which covers a prominent headland near Hihi in Doubtless Bay. Rangitoto Reserve is vested with Far North District council and is currently held as a Recreation Reserve. Further to a recommendation by the Te Hiku Community Board and a decision at a council meeting in August 2023, a proposal to classify Rangitoto Reserve as a Historic Reserve under the Reserves Act 1977 is being considered.
Rangitoto Pā is situated within this reserve and is renowned for its historical significance, archaeological importance, and cultural value to mana whenua.
Under the Reserves Act, the council is required to publicly notify a proposed classification or change to a reserve classification so that people can have their say.
